AP Environmental Science classes act as a North Carolina StreamWatch Group in their monitoring of the Green Hope Wetland. This area was originally a natural meandering stream through farmland. When the adjacent schools were built, a sedimentation pond was constructed and, later, beavers built a dam in the same area. The result was an in-stream wetland. The wetland is a Certified Wildlife Habitat through the National Wildlife Federation.

The study site is located at 35.8066 N78.8639 W at an elevation of 411 feet above sea level.  The stream is part of the Neuse River Basin, with its waters running north to Crabtree Creek, then Lake Crabtree, and on to the Neuse River.
